Blog Birthday

It's my blog birthday! It's wild to me that six years ago I started this fashion blog. I can hardly think of anything that lasted in my life for six years--it's longer than I've lived in a single state, longer than I attended any school, etc. Through study abroad, college graduation, and post-graduation moving around this blog has remained one constant in my life. Rather funny. Anyway, this afternoon I'll recap some events and changes from the past six years, for now I've continued my annual tradition of a special video shot just for this occasion. A Self Portrait Shoot

I've shot videos showing my picture-taking process before (you can see one in an abandoned train car here), but here's a newer one for your enjoyment. I might make a video describing the process and tips on how I work next--I'm always game to shoot more videos although it takes more time and I need more help than my typical shoots. My process in brief: I always use natural light, I use my purse as a stand-in to figure out the focus and other settings, then it's set the self-timer and dash! Honestly, I find it a rather awkward process so I quite dislike shooting around people. In the attempt of avoiding crowds I do find some beautiful places to shoot. My friend Jon shot and edited the video for me at my favorite abandoned barn. I hope you enjoy it!

Passion Is The Best Makeup

Despite my lack of skills in the makeup department I get asked about my products and routine often enough I decided to make a brief video highlighting my daily pattern. I'm pretty light with the makeup touch (other than eyeliner which more depends on my mood) and apply nearly everything with my fingertips. For a more dramatic look I'll wear a matte red lipstick or add eyeshadow and mascara, but most days it's just what you see in the video above. The video isn't the best quality, but I thought it was better to share it now and work on creating a better version later than putting it off and putting it off! Anyway, if you've been curious now you have answers. Basically I use:
-Chanel Perfect Lumiere foundation
-Makeup Forever full coverage pink porcelain (for trouble spots or the circles around my eyes!)
-Nars blush in orgasm
-Buxom white eyeliner
-Lancome noir eyeliner
-Tarte lip tint in matte rose or creme in love

I Want Candy

Actually, I'm not sure I actually want the new perfume from Prada titled Candy but this three-part commercial directed by Roman Coppola and Wes Anderson has me intrigued. As highly stylized as everything Wes Anderson touches the mini-film is a feast for the eyes. I don't know what scent notes Prada's Candy holds, but if it bottles some of Lea Seydoux's charms then it should render the wearer well nigh irresistible...

What would you do with an extra day? Everyday by Gustav Johansson asks that question and answers it in the most romantic way. What I enjoy perhaps the best is the awkward moments of silence and how the two voices are slightly out of sync--the way these two people are obviously thinking about how they'd spend an extra day together but even so there are these gaps between them. Anyway, it's a sweet little video and the perfect inspiration for a Saturday.

Take My Picture is a mini-documentary about the popularity of street style blogs and the hordes of photographers swarming every fashion week. Fashion editors seem annoyed by the trend while simultaneously ignoring that many of the most documented individuals for "peococking" are editors (Taylor Tomasi Hill and Anna Dello Russo are two street fashion favorites that pop to mind). Still, it's a very interesting video showing the madness outside of a show and hearing opinions from editors, photographers, and bloggers alike. Whatever your final opinion you can't deny that street fashion photography is re-shaping the way people view fashion.

Alexandra Grecco F/W 2013

Brooklyn-based designer Alexandra Grecco seems to be getting better and better each season and with some of her pieces now being carried throughout the country at major stores (such as Anthropologie), I'm not the only one who seems to think so. Her Fall/Winter collection for 2013 serves up typical Grecco fare in the form of classic shapes and bow-embellishments. Standouts for me are the sculpted jumper dress and printed pieces featuring delicate illustrations of insects that appear like a simple floral pattern from a distance. Also, while we're on the subject of Alexandra Grecco, you should watch this video featuring clothes from one of her past collections. It's directed by and features Celia Rowlson Hall--an incredible choreographer who really makes some delightful short films. I'm very inspired by her work lately. 

Garment Recycling with H&M: An Unhaul Video

I’m really excited to bring you all a special video today. It’s been too long since my last video so it was pretty great to get the push from H&M for a new one. This one is all about H&M’s global garment recycling effort and it’s basically the opposite of a haul video. 

My good friend Jon helped me shoot the video and we even snuck Nasha in for a mini stop-motion. I did a little ‘spring cleaning’ of my closet (which has been in desperate need) and filled a couple of bags with clothes to recycle at H&M. They have some great incentives to encourage you to donate your old clothes, but really the best part is: knowing that your clothes aren’t being wasted in the back of your closet or a box in your basement.

Quick facts on their program:
