I Don't Need To Wear Vintage

FREE IMAGES

Stylist Natalie Joos behind Tales of Endearment was recently given access to Diane von Furstenberg's personal archive and the result is this dreamy, print-loaded editorial shot at the designer's own estate. The editorial is accompanied by Joos' personal story of the day--of getting stopped at the intimidating metal gates limiting access to Furstenberg's estate named "Cloudwalk." It is this personal story that Tales of Endearment is known for. Yes, the images are arresting but as I've mentioned before it's only part of the story. Digging through Furstenberg's archives ultimately leads to the question, "no vintage?" As Furstenberg changes from one outfit to another, the designer replied, "I don't need to wear vintage--I am vintage." A fitting line that would usually be lost in a sea of photographs.

I'm quite enamored with these digital collages by Sixto-Juan Zavala for Highlife Shop Magazine. It's a brilliant blend of artistry and accuracy--the images depict the notes in each perfume. It's really a brilliant way to highlight the myriad of delicate scents that go into a signature perfume or cologne. I wish perfume bottles could somehow manage to re-create this look...

Jalouse

There's a subtle, almost dark take on preppy in this Jalouse editorial I can't get enough of. Perhaps it's only the model's knowing smirk as she poses for photographer Cédric Viollet, but somehow even the most collegiate looks are elevated into something more interesting. Really can you go wrong with primly collared blouses, chunky oxford heels, and Bardot-esque hair?

New Look

FREE IMAGES

Du Juan looks gorgeous in these images for Numero China photographed by Yin Chao. The photographs echo the work of Willy Maywald (best known for being Dior's in-house photographer) quite beautifully. Christian Dior's debut haute couture collection cemented him as the father of the 1940s "New Look" which was defined by full, mid-calf to floor length skirts, small structured waist lines, a large bust and a gentle sloping shoulder. Dior wasn't the first to create this silhouette which was already nostalgic and caused public outcry since it debuted shortly after the second World War. Rations were still ever-present in people's minds and women had become accustomed to a more comfortable, boxy, and more prudent shape. Of course, the so-called "New Look" is even more dated to our eyes now, but evokes a bygone sense of glamour some wish we could reclaim. Regardless, the above editorial pays beautiful homage to the style.

Felicity Jones glows in this pared down editorial for So It Goes magazine photographed by Eliot Lee Hazel. I love the warm light leaks and simplicity of the setting and wardrobe. Sometimes all you need is a striped tee and a perfectly tilted beret. via

Something In A Summer's Noon

FREE IMAGES

"A something in a summer’s Day
As slow her flambeaux burn away
Which solemnizes me.

A something in a summer’s noon —
A depth — an Azure — a perfume —
Transcending ecstasy.

And still within a summer’s night
A something so transporting bright
I clap my hands to see —

Then veil my too inspecting face
Lets such a subtle — shimmering grace
Flutter too far for me—"

"The human heart has hidden treasures,
In secret kept, in silence sealed;
The thoughts, the hopes, the dreams, the pleasures,
Whose charms were broken if revealed.
And days may pass in gay confusion,
And nights in rosy riot fly,
While, lost in Fame's or Wealth's illusion,
The memory of the Past may die.

But, there are hours of lonely musing,
Such as in evening silence come,
When, soft as birds their pinions closing,
The heart's best feelings gather home.
Then in our souls there seems to languish
A tender grief that is not woe;
And thoughts that once wrung groans of anguish,
Now cause but some mild tears to flow.

And feelings, once as strong as passions,
Float softly backa faded dream;
Our own sharp griefs and wild sensations,
The tale of others' sufferings seem.
Oh ! when the heart is freshly bleeding,
How longs it for that time to be,
When, through the mist of years receding,
Its woes but live in reverie !

And it can dwell on moonlight glimmer,
On evening shade and loneliness;
And, while the sky grows dim and dimmer,
Feel no untold and strange distress
Only a deeper impulse given
By lonely hour and darkened room,
To solemn thoughts that soar to heaven,
Seeking a life and world to come."

This is a mighty room;
Within its precincts hopes have played,
Now shadows in the tomb."

"A bush of May flowers with the bees about them;
Ah, sure no tasteful nook would be without them;
And let a lush laburnum oversweep them,
And let long grass grow round the roots to keep them
Moist, cool and green; and shade the violets,
That they may bind the moss in leafy nets."

Gay Paris

Codie Young nails casual cool in perhaps the chicest capital of the world--Paris. Far too cool for the tourist pics in front of the Eiffel tower or even a cliche walk along the Seine, this fair-headed model somehow still makes light wash jeans and white sneakers look enviably stylish. When I dress uber casual I feel somewhere between invisible and a slob, but miss Young is a land-locked mermaid still deserving to grace the pages of a fashion magazine in her most casual duds. It's a definitely a shoot that conveys much more cool than glamour and sometimes that's exactly what we want.

I definitely have a strong case of wanderlust, although I never know if that's the proper term for someone's whose more natural state is traveling or moving. I don't so much have this endless desire to wander for pleasure, but rather my idea of "home" is a moving target. Anyway, editorials and shoots that convey a sense of exploration really grab my attention. Love this one titled Chelsea and Le Temple Maudit for Jalouse magazine photographed by Matthew Frost. It's just the right mix of escapism and practicality.
